Summary
- Ubisoft’s Project U is a hero shooter in development to compete with Marvel Rivals and Overwatch.
- The game was once put “on ice,” reworked, and is still being worked on, with more leaks expected.
- Given Ubisoft’s history with live-service games, Project U is likely to be free-to-play if released.
Do you have room for another hero shooter to fit in your gaming time? Whether you’re playing Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2, SMITE 2 or something else, Ubisoft is hoping you have room for another one.

Project U Is Ubisoft’s Hero Shooter To Go Up Against Marvel Rivals
According to the video uploader, Ubisoft is “still holding on to this game.” It was “on ice” and it was then reworked, and the publisher is still working on it.
Expect more leaks to be surface, as the video uploader says there will be “more soon.”
On Reddit, various members of the community chimed in about the game. One verified user said, “I can confirm that Ubisoft is still holding on to this game.”
Another person commented on the project, and it seems based on the closed tests, it failed to impress. “Oh, this. I, uh, can’t remember if players had to sign an NDA, but let’s just say I know a guy who played this once and I can’t recall this guy, who’s totally not me, having much of a desire to play another time,” the redditor mentioned.
Ubisoft has not announced this game, and it’s currently unknown whether the project really is still in development. If it is, it has an uphill climb given how popular Marvel Rivals is, and it doesn’t seem like its popularity is about to wane anytime soon.

Marvel Rivals Patch Updates Nearly A Dozen Hero Fixes, But One Major Problem Remains
NetEase has released several updates and fixes to numerous heroes, but one community requested change has gone unanswered.
Given Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently said that he wants more live-service and open-world games to be released by the company, then Project U should fit that bill. While nothing’s confirmed yet, chances are high that this will be another free-to-play endeavor, unless Ubisoft is looking for this to be a boxed premium product, which will mean it’ll be DOA (dead on arrival) given the hero shooter market leaders Marve Rivals and Overwatch are free-to-play.
The company’s latest multplayer project to see release didn’t even last a year, and I’m referring to XDefiant. While it rocketed out of the gate, it wasn’t able to maintain its momentum, and just months after launch, its server closure was announced to take place in June 2025.
Aside from XDefiant, Ubisoft has a slew of misfires going after the live-service formula. There was free-to-play battle royale Hyperscape, Roller Champions and more. Of course, for every failure, the company can point to something like Rainbow Six Siege that has been chugging on for 10 years as proof that its plans can work.
Do you think the market has room for one more hero shooter? And are you willing to give Project U a try if it ever sees the light of day?
