Freelance writing can be a very well-rewarded business for those willing to invest in it. But it takes a lot of time of writing for free or low fees, which stinks but is just the way it is.

I wrote for at least 10 years before I dropped down to a twenty-hour-a-week day job in 2015, then fully quit in 2016 after my writing got me steady freelancing work. At that stage, I was earning between $30-$50 an hour. And things have gotten better with time, learning, and dedicated work.

I am sure of something: the quality jobs are out there, and those editors are looking for quality writers. If you’re looking to get into the business, you should not only work on your writing skills but work also on your business skills.

I would recommend investing in the following:

Growing your skillset: Advancing your ability means studying language, editing, research, marketing, and others to increase exponentially the “price” of your time. It will prepare you for more interesting and better-paid jobs. I try to learn every day. Why? Because that investment gives always the best returns for them and me.

Getting relevant experience: This will depend a lot on which kind of work you are looking for, but make sure to always knock on as many doors as possible. Whether you split up your time with things like internships, volunteering, or entry-level jobs, or decide to start freelancing on websites like Upwork, Fiverr, or PeoplePerHour make sure to leave a mark and create with that a resume or profile that is professional and competitive. Landing a good job today and performing well on it will bring better opportunities for tomorrow.

A top-notch portfolio: Write a lot and keep a record of that writing. Select your best work and show it to the world. Update it constantly. Your writing will speak on your behalf and will help you to get more work.

Study on Lynda: Online Courses, Classes, Training, Tutorials and read Made to Stick, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and Getting Things Done. That will get you started.

    Keep working, you’ll get there,

    Paulette

The 10 Safest Free Software Download Sites for Windows

Many software download sites are loaded with malware. Here are the safest sites you can trust when looking for free software downloads.

    1. Official Software Websites

Before we get into the sites that offer lots of different Windows software, it’s worth remembering that the safest place to download the most popular software is often right from its official website. If you’re looking to download a browser, security suite, media app, or similar, you can’t get much more secure than its homepage.

Some software may still try to foist unwanted bundled junk on you from its official website, but you can be pretty sure it’s free of malware. If you don’t know an app’s download page, a quick Google search for “download Spotify” or similar will bring up a box that takes you right to it. Just make sure you’re on the official page.

    2. Ninite

Ninite is simple. The website presents you with a list of popular programs to select, and you check the boxes for all the apps you want. Then, clicking the download button will give you a custom installer file that bundles all the selected programs together, allowing you to install them in bulk.

    3. Softpedia

Softpedia is one of the largest download sites around; it’s delivered over three billion downloads over the years. The most popular apps are updated every day, allowing you to get clean and malware-free software that’s also as recent as possible.

    4. MajorGeeks

Even though the site looks like it hasn’t been updated since the 1990s, MajorGeeks has been one of the most reputable software download sites for some time.

    5. FileHippo

FileHippo is a well-known site with tons of active programs broken down into categories. It also has a repository of web apps, if you aren’t set on just downloading desktop software.

The site will occasionally prompt you to download another app (such as Opera) before the one you asked for. But this is clearly labeled, easy to skip, and doesn’t push shady software.

FileHippo goes further by also offering older versions of software. While you generally shouldn’t install outdated software for security reasons, it’s a useful option to have in case you run into issues with the latest version.

    6. Download Crew

download Crew’s website stands out thanks to its short but informative descriptions on each app page. These are written by real users, not just copied and pasted from the vendor’s website. You’ll learn what each app does, its perks, and any flaws.

The top section has Featured Downloads, making it a good place to get started. It also has a robust list of options for the software licenses, including Open Source, Trialware, and more. This lets you drill down into exactly what kind of free software you’re getting.

    7. FileHorse

FileHorse doesn’t have a massive repository of software. Instead, this site focuses on stocking the best and most useful programs. Each product page has screenshots so you know what to expect, plus version compatibility, a changelog, links to old versions, and more.

Because the homepage is broken into a relatively small number of categories like Video Software and Cleaning and Tweaking, it’s also a good place to find trusted alternatives to popular software.

    8. FilePuma

    FilePuma Software Download

FilePuma has a pretty basic interface and focuses on simplicity. Search for the software you’re interested in, or browse its categories to find something new. Since the categories have the most popular tools right on the homepage, it’s easy to see what’s on offer.

    9. SnapFiles

    SnapFiles Software Downloads

SnapFiles looks like a lot of the other download sites we’ve featured, but it has a few cool functions that make it worth a look. One of these is the Freeware Pick on the homepage, which highlights a piece of software you might not have known about. And under More at the top of the page, you’ll find a Random Pick, which is also great for discovering new software to download.

There’s also a dedicated page for Portable Apps, handy if you want to run apps without installing them. SnapFiles also features user reviews on software download pages, plus warnings on apps that try to install bundled software.

    10. The Microsoft Store

    Microsoft Store Apps

It’s easy to ignore the Microsoft Store, which is the home for Modern apps on Windows 10 and Windows 11. And while a lot of its offerings aren’t particularly great, you can still find some solid apps on the Store.

Using Store apps also has some benefits compared to their traditional counterparts. Store apps update automatically update themselves. And more importantly, they are sandboxed, so they can’t intrude on other areas of your system. Have a look to see if your favorite apps are on the Microsoft Store and you might be pleasantly surprised with what else you dig up.

The Best Free Software Download Sites to Visit

Remember that no site can ever be 100 percent safe. A rogue ad may slip through, or the site could get hacked or sold to a malicious company. But in general, the download sites we’ve featured here are clean and trustworthy.

Use a bit of common sense and don’t install anything that seems shady. If a site offers a “faster” download manager, ignore it and use the direct download instead. And before you start, make sure you can spot ads disguised as download links.

How To Earn Money With Laptop And Internet

Most of us have so many items in our homes that we no longer use or need. You can make a quick buck by selling these off to people who might have some use for them. To sell your household items you will have to take great photos of them because people are used to seeing beautiful pictures or items online now. Always be truthful about the item’s state and show any faults clearly in pictures and in any descriptions you write. You don’t have to be the cheapest but you want to make it look like value for money to get the sale. Sell just before the item’s best season ideally.

The places where you can sell household stuff fast:

    • eBay
    • Amazon
    • Craigslist
    • Bonanza
    • Offer Up
    • SellMax

Few tips for using eBay or Craigslist:

    • Avoid having to ship
    • Focus on popular items
    • Choose pieces that are convenient to sell online

    Take SurveysTake Surveys
An excellent online survey provides you with clear, reliable, actionable insight to inform your decision-making. Great surveys have higher response rates, higher quality data, and are easy to fill out.

But what’s more, is that you can earn from taking surveys! Many companies are willing to pay for your thoughts on a product. You can look up and make accounts on ValuedOpinions, ThePanelStation, and alike to earn a few bucks on the side. What’s more, is that some of the surveys don’t even require a laptop and can be done using just your phone and a stable internet connection.

Some tips to give a great survey:

    • Do not lie on the signup page and change details about yourself to get more surveys.
    • Do not randomly click on any answer on the MCQs as sometimes they have included questions to check if you are reading the question.
    • Be as informative as you can with your answers
    • Be patient. It takes time to sometimes get the survey for your demographic so this cannot be your only job and just a side income as it is not stable.

    Layers of the app

Normally, a web app is a server-based back-end that runs on a client(IE your internet browser). Once you reach the web app(there is a lot to cover there) you have a front-end client, that will handle the user interface and process some client-side tasks (such as DOM manipulation, UI formatting based on your device, and so on… ). The front-end is the part that you see, and it’s a result of the back-end pumping and handling data.

You talk with the back-end using HTTP and other protocols. Every part of the back-end will take care of handling the “logical” side of the app. For example, when you log in to an app, the back-end will make sure to authenticate, check if the password is good, etc…

In between the back-end and the front-end, a lot is happening. How data are transferred from one interface to the other and so on.

    Back-end

Java, C++, Python, etc… Pretty much any language that can handle IO will be somehow able to perform the basic role of a web server.

    Front-end

    HTML, CSS, Javascript.

Javascript is an interpreted language that runs in your browser. You can check out V8 from Google and other architecture of the Chrome browser to see how the language is handled from the client-side.

Here are the basics: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for front-end development. SQL and a server-side language for back-end development. Which server-side language is up to you. I’d go for PHP, but you could also use JavaScript (with Node.js), Python, Ruby, Java…

Those are just the basic technologies you need to know. There are also many other tools, libraries, and frameworks that are worth knowing and useful depending on what you’re doing. But if you start with these basics, you’ll get to them eventually.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This is one of the basic technologies needed for web development. This provides the basic structure of the site. HTML code ensures that all content on your site is properly formatted. CSS is a cascading style sheet. CSS allows web designers to change colors, fonts, animations, and transitions on the web. They make the web beautiful.

Programming languages are ways of communicating with computers and telling them what to do. There are many different programming languages. Neither is better than the other. Developers usually only recognize a few, so they encourage them more than others.

Frameworks are designed to facilitate the creation and use of programming languages. Frameworks usually take over all the difficult and repetitive tasks of setting up new web applications and either does it for you or make it very easy for you.

Libraries are collections of code snippets that allow you to activate many features without having to write everything yourself. Libraries usually do everything they can to ensure that their code is efficient and works well on all browsers and devices.

The application code is usually stored on the server. Requests are sent by clients to the server and the server collects the appropriate information and responds to those requests.

The front interface consists of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The backend system consists of the server and the database. This is where functions, methods, and data manipulations take place that customers cannot see.

There are many powerful tools available. However, I have had two problems with the available tools:

    1. Most tools are tremendously different and focus on small areas of need. To build a real application, you must select a number of different technologies and make them work together now and moving forward. This is a very big job initially and keeping it all working as each package gets updated at different frequencies.
    2. Many technologies are far more complex than they need to be. In an effort to support the widest array of needs, these technologies become inordinately complex to master.

Frustrated with these issues, I ended up writing my own, Java-based, open-source, web development framework called KISS. KISS includes the front-end, back-end, REST communications, microservices, authentication, SQL API, reporting, and a lot more. It has now been used commercially in several products.

KISS can be downloaded, built, and run as a complete web application in less than five minutes!
