Product and design choices.

Android auto and Apple Car Play have become a standard offering on a car display in recent years. The platform effects have ensured that these are now ubiquitous. I observed that only a few apps are casted onto the car screens when connected to these platforms. For example, i could not cast my Instagram app onto the car screen. When i researched into it, i realized that there are safety issues at play here. Android Auto/Apple Car play is designed with driving-specific tasks in mind. Apps that do not contribute to the driving experience or could potentially distract the driver are not permitted on the platform. Apps on these platforms must be controllable through voice commands and have a simplified user interface suitable for quick, non-distracting interactions. Instagram’s core functions — browsing images, videos, and engaging in social interactions — are not easily adaptable to this format.

And perhaps there are government regulations which may drive this as well, which leads to design decisions. Organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. and similar bodies in other countries provide guidelines for in-car infotainment systems to ensure they are safe for use while driving.

I love the feature that Kayak.com has which enables a user to explore destinations…
