Advertisers You Can’t Stand? Reddit Now Lets You Hide Them

If there are some brands you just can’t stand, Reddit will now let you hide advertisers whose ads you don’t want to see.

You’ll be able to click the “Hide” button next to a post, and Reddit won’t serve you ads from that advertiser account for “at least a year,” according to a post by a Reddit employee, first spotted by Ars Technica. If one year isn’t enough, you’ll be able to choose to block the advertiser again when the time has passed.

The feature is set to debut “in the next few weeks” on both the Reddit website and its iOS and Android apps. The post didn’t provide much clarity about the limits of the new feature and what restrictions are in place to stop users from simply blocking every ad they see. But some users have already spotted “daily limits” on the number of ads they can block, Ars Technica notes.

Reddit had already given its users some ad-blocking features, but they were not nearly as in-depth. Users could already block entire categories of sensitive ads by type, for example, “Gambling,” “Alcohol,” or “Politics and activism.”

The news comes as Reddit is looking to find more ways to eke out revenue from its users other than just advertising, after turning a profit for the first time in its history as a publicly traded company in October. According to Reddit’s CEO, paywalled content is set to make its debut on the site at some point in 2025, though this will only apply to new rather than pre-existing subreddits.

The website also revealed a number of other potential avenues to generate revenue, including introducing an in-house payment system, as well as selling “social listening” data to third parties. The social media platform has also been rolling out plenty of features that have nothing to do with monetization, including new tools that allow users to check if their posts meet community guidelines before they post.
