10 Best Video Games For Game of Thrones Fans

10 Best Video Games For Game of Thrones Fans

Game of Thrones is a global phenomenon and even though the show has been over for years now, the world persists through spinoffs like House of the Dragon.

What about the gaming world though? Well, Game of Thrones has had a few games come out, though none ever managed to approach the success that the name would suggest.

There are, however, many games that can satisfy that low fantasy, sprawling political world itch. We’re going to check out a handful of games that capture the magic of Game of Thrones.

The criteria will be games that involve massive worlds, multiple factions/houses, and overall engaging plots that use misdirection and massive twists to tell the story. We’re also going to be sticking to more modern titles for this list.

10 Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

History and Mythical Aspects Combine

Eivor stands on a ruined castle wall while wearing the Reaper armor set

While Assassin’s Creed may not jump out as the obvious choice for a Game of Thrones-style game, let me paint the picture for you.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla puts you in the shoes of a viking named Eivor seeking allies across the country to unite against the enemy, Alfraed, and his army.

Throughout the game, you will travel to different locales, discovering the nation’s problems and deciding how to help each land to secure more military power. Sounds a little bit like Danaerys Targaryen, doesn’t it?

Not convinced yet? Okay, how about an entire segment dedicated to fighting the Picts, a group who live in a snow-covered land beyond a towering wall? The Picts were the inspiration for the Wildlings. Fun fact.

You’ve also got the looming presence of a much larger threat via mystical nonsense that Assassin’s Creed piles on top, tons of characters, twists and turns, and, overall, it’s a great experience for anyone looking for what Game of Thrones has to offer.

9 Triangle Strategy

Triangle Strategy is the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics, which is perhaps the most Game of Thrones-type game out there, but we’re sticking with more modern titles here and Triangle Strategy understands the assignment.

While the surface of the game may look family-friendly, what lies beneath is a complex, political drama with tons of twists and turns, intricate character development, and world-building and focus on the various kingdoms that inhabit the world.

The gameplay is, of course, in classic tactics fashion, and magic is involved, but the heart of the game is in the incredible writing, the strong characters, and the mature feel that is somewhat hard to find in the genre these days.

Since those are the key cogs to Game of Thrones, Triangle Strategy is a perfect choice.

8 Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

Building Allies to Face a Galactic Threat

Mass Effect 3 All Squad Members, Ranked

Mass Effect is one of the most famous franchises of all time and though you might think the space-faring adventure may feel more like Star Wars, it’s far closer to Game of Thrones.

First off, the tone is incredibly mature, as the adults are in the room when it comes to the writing, worlds, and overall vibe of Mass Effect.

You’ve also got your great savior character who is initially doubted by all, only to be seen as the key point of defense against a galactic threat.

Commander Shepard is Jon Snow, right down to the point that he must die and be revived to complete his mission.

There is tons of political drama, with various races detesting each other and each one plays a key part in helping defend the universe from the Reapers.

Speaking of which, the Reapers are the White Walkers of this game world, a threat that is so vast, that it makes all the other squabbles insignificant in the endgame, requiring once hated rivals and fierce enemies to come together to face them for the good of the galaxy.

If that hasn’t convinced you, both have extremely polarizing endings that fans of the series claim ruin the stories completely.

7 Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Anime Game of Thrones

Fire Emblem has always been a series full of political turmoil and mature themes, but it wasn’t till Fire Emblem: Three Houses that you got to fully experience its world from multiple views.

There are essentially three separate games here, as you can play through the main story with one of three houses that changes the narrative structure considerably depending on which you play.

While it starts as one big happy family, quickly, a conflict separates the three houses and causes you to go to war against characters you’d been comrades with previously.

It’s not hard to draw comparisons to Robert’s Rebellion with the way things play out here and that’s not a bad thing.

While things are done with a somewhat cliché, anime flair to them, usually the tone remains serious with plenty of plot twists to keep you interested throughout and the aspect of any character dying at any time adds that extra bit of intrigue that makes you care about the characters that much more.

6 Final Fantasy 16

They Did Their Homework

Final Fantasy 16 takes the series in a decidedly darker direction than what fans are used to and part of this was due to its main inspiration.

Before writing the story of the game, the entire development team was asked to watch season one of Game of Thrones.

That’s a true story and what resulted was the darkest Final Fantasy tale of all time.

From the main character Clive, being a hated “other child” with a pet dog that fights alongside him, to the evil queen who only cares about herself and her family, to the disgraced prince who is accused of regicide….yeah, it’s not exactly subtle about what you’re getting into here.

Luckily, it’s done fantastically with some unreal boss fights, amazing plot twists, and a complex political story that eventually gives weight to a magical enemy threatening to destroy life itself.

5 Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

The Untold Stories of Westeros

Game of Thrones- a Telltale games series Cersei talking

Developer

Telltales Games

Release Date

December 2nd, 2014

Platforms

Android, IOS, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One

While there aren’t many Game of Thrones games worth mentioning, Game of Thrones: A Telltales Games Series is absolutely one of them.

This came out at a time when we were just fresh from the Red Wedding and there was plenty of intrigue left in the story to be told.

What this game does is, instead of putting you in the shoes of the well-known characters, you get to control the other people of Westeros who are being affected by the events of the main plot.

These are the best mainline Final Fantasy games released to date.

It’s a brilliant twist and whether it’s playing as an inquisitive handmaid to Margaery Tyrell or as a young lord of a house under one Ramsay Bolton, you will get tons of that signature Game of Thrones feeling.

The gameplay is also very engaging, with important dialogue choices to make and various ways events can play out depending on your choices.

The biggest issue with the game is the lack of an ending and, sadly, we are likely never going to see how this particular tale ended.

4 Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord

Building a Kingdom

Heavy Strugian Spearmen Lined Up For Battle

For the full Game of Thrones experience, Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is a fantastic choice. You decide how to build your kingdom, whether from scratch or under a lord, and from there, the world is your oyster.

You have full freedom on what troops you want in your army, who you want to betray or befriend, whether you’re going to be part of a larger kingdom or write history in your name. It’s all up to you.

You are essentially creating your own story here and it can go countless different ways. This is a blank slate medieval world waiting for you to make your mark on it.

If that’s not enough, some mods convert the entire game to Westeros, including dragons, White Walkers, and lifelike recreations of characters from the show.

3 Dragon’s Dogma 2

The Dragon’s Calling

The Player Fighting With The Battahli Shield

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has more than a few allusions to Game of Thrones. A vengeful queen with an innocent son, kings laying false claims to thrones, and dragons that threaten to destroy everything. It’s all there.

The story itself isn’t too enthralling, but there is a lot of lore and interesting side quests to check out that help flesh out the world.

In terms of fast-paced, dragon-slaying action though, no game will give you the feeling of those big-budget fights from the show, like Dragon’s Dogma 2.

The story does take some interesting twists too, and most of the characters you meet are expendable, leading to a feeling of uncertainty whenever a dangerous event happens, as you have no way of knowing who will survive.

2 Dragon Age: Origins

Inspired by Westeros

Darkspawn Dragon Age Origins

Dragon Age is a series that might resemble Lord of the Rings at first glance, but as you get deeper, you realize this is very much inspired by Game of Thrones.

The way everything is set up, you can find parallels very quickly. The Darkspawn? The deadly force that the nobles all ignore as a true threat when it’s clear they are the end-game enemy? White Walkers.

Who is in charge of fighting the Darkspawn? The Grey Wardens, and when they enter their pact, there is no turning back. Well, that sounds like The Night’s Watch to me, and It’s not even all that subtle.

When Dragon Age: Origins was released, Game of Thrones had yet to take over the world and because of that, it was a breath of fresh air. While it hasn’t aged great in certain aspects, the mature story, great characters, and twisting narrative will be perfect for any Game of Thrones fan.

1 Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

The Life of a Normal Westerosi Resident

Dialogue with von bergow at maleshov Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

If you like the brutality and grittiness of the world of Game of Thrones, no game does it better than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and the first game does it pretty well too.

If you ever wondered what the life of the less royal members of the Westerosi world looked like, Henry is a great example of that person.

He is very much the victim of the big, political plays for power that populate a world like Westeros and here, we get to see what happens when one of the peasants of the world decides to fight back.

You’ll be working jobs, having to smith your weapons, find beds to sleep in, fight in wars, and all in all, live a true medieval life in so many ways.

There is also tons of political drama, backstabbing, weddings that go horribly wrong, and all kinds of exciting events popping up.

The writing is perhaps Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2′s greatest asset, as the repartee between characters and the countless unique characters help bring this game world to life in a way that few others have achieved.
